Let me give one of my all time favorite examples. Back in the middle
ages, before the Italians and the Dutch began the Renaissance, Tom
Clark, (K3IO, ex-W3IWI) was a graduate student in radio astronomy at U.
Colorado and I was a mere gleam in my father's eye (we didn't even have
Leyden jar electricity that was so long ago ;-) ).

Tom needed a commutating capacitor mixer (cum filter bank) in a system
to do detection of his own echo off the moon. He arranged for a rotary
switch and bank of capacitors to be synchronous (or nearly so) and did
detection of his own echo's off the moon using this switched capacitor
filter bank and mixer by figuring out on which phase the capacitor
should have the largest voltage if he were really hearing his own 2
meter echo. He continued this synchronous operation until he had a
statistically significant detection of his own echo. (Tom, do I still
have a bed to sleep in next week? ;-) ).

Laziness is the number one inspiration for ingenuity. Guilty as charged!
