BTW, the Huff & Puff technique is not used only by us amateurs and
experimenters. The highly touted (albeit old) HP 8640B signal
generator uses a free running cavity oscillator, optionally stabilized
with that technique (which is more correctly referred to as FLL,
Frequency Locked Loop). The even better signal generator SMDU by Rohde
& Schwarz also has an option of locking the oscillator to the internal
frequency counter with steps of 12.5, 20, 25, 50, 10, 150 kHz (I know,
I have one on my bench).
