Back a few years ago (1984), I built a Intel 8080 controlled transceiver. The chip was preprogrammed by Heath Kit. I do not remember the chip specifically whether it is a eprom like programmed chip or if it had a ultra violet window to erase it or what. I wish to re-study it.
It was able to control three pll vco's and mixed them into its band schemes. It also drove a florescent digital frequency display. Tuning was by way of a slotted optical wheel on the vfo knob. I was looking in the Jameco catalog and noticed that since then, there have been many versions of the Intel 8000 series microprocessors and that they can be had for a few bucks, very cheaply. I suspect that somewheres back in the web archives in some data bases there may be some prewritten machine language programs for these chips to use with radio. All you need is your PC and some fabrications to program these from the PC. There should by now be some PC software for these chips. Anyways this is the way the radio hobbyist should go if they wish to enter into microprocessor controlled radios with a DIP sized microprocessor. I am talking about chips for $2 to $3 each! I am sure that C Basic and variations of C language can also be used with these chips. I am pretty sure since the mid 1980'a era home PCs used the Intel 8080 chip. I am looking at the power of the chip to controll vco's and provide digital frequency readouts. And who knows what all else can be added as features? So this is the chip to look into or the series of chips for SDR uses. Sort of a no non sense chip and thats the way to start. ka9rza _____________________________________________________________________ Call Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere in the World - FREE!
