Enjoying SDRadio 1.00 and Winrad When I have a weak AM station on my USB Receiver's software I turn it off and then use SDRadio and then I can hear it better. I have done some comparative test of the audio detection levels of the softwares and Alberto's software improves the detection loudness many dB's over comparative software. Alberto's softwares are very much more sensitive and immune to the noise: having a better signal to noise ratio. They pull up the signals out of the background, so you have something here thats interesting and useful all the way around. SDRadio even pulls up some very accurate bass in music broadcast and the all around sound is interesting and sort of like a very good Grundig Radio sound. I am pleased at the sound quality when it comes to listening to a good signal and it reproduces the fidelity very well. Again the bass seems very accurate and is not at all muddy or bland. I play guitar and so believe me, bass and highs are the thing.
Now about a glitch in SDRadio which may be due to my PC Speed: My PC speed is 680 MHz with 144 MHz of 256 MB RAM, Win98, 2cd Ed. So this might be related to my particular PC but when I use the "Denoiser" on the "SDRadio" it slows down the processing in AM and ECSS modes and then I can not immediately click the buttons on SDRadio. It then seems starved for power, and operating in a sluggish manner. I do not use the Denoiser feature with SDRadio since the ECSS mode is good at noise rejection and has excellent sound quality. In SSB mode it still is slow but a little faster than with AM or ECSS> Now on a faster PC I suspect that this may not be noticed at all. So I assume this is the case with a faster CPU. But if there are problems let Alberto know so he can perfect his gems and so far they are gem like softwares. Winrad look so clean and high tech it will be a favorite of many for years to come. "Please post such problems for Alberto to fix if you notice any." Error report I get once and awhile with SDRadio: "Access violation at address 0048249C in module 'SDRADiO.EXE' Read of address FFFFFFFF" Sometimes this can be clicked off and you can keep on working the software. Other times this freezes up the software and then the PC has to be restarted. It appears to happen most often when I am making changes in the the choice of the display bandwidth via the " _____Freq. span_____ " selections. I minimize this by trying to remember to click Standby first then make a selection then turn the reception back on. Winrad's Denoiser does not seem to suffer from this one bit and so whatever Alberto is doing in Winrad may need to be done in SDRadio. Or go to a noise blanker feature instead for SDRadio. The Denoiser does not seem to be needed in the ECSS mode which also makes the AM sound better in ECSS instead of AM. Other than the above, all is fine. *I am pleased with the power of the softwares to pull out of the noise the weaker signals and make them intelligent. I am using SDRadio now to hear WBCQ and the broadcast "This Week In Amateur Radio." Winrad can really pull up the weak SSB signals. One thing I can do is to change the Averaging of the software to 128 and then this compresses the average of the peaks and adds a slight reverb or echo to the stations and then the weak ones stand out even more. In regular use I find that the Averaging is best set at 8. And when I am trying to pull up a weak AM signal I use Winrad to do that in SSB mode. So "Weak Signals" is the name of the game with Alberto's softwares. <http://www.weaksignals.com/> Dan ka9rza _____________________________________________________________________ PrivatePhone - FREE telephone number & voicemail.
