I know of a fellow (I think he is Bruno, over in Italy) who uses his CIAO
H101 hardware tapped into a receiver after the crystal filter and says that he
is doing well with it. And there seems to be an interest in trying this by
others. I also have from the beginning wondered about trying the same. I
would think that since the receiver then would have its agc working, that the
SDR software should be used either in slow agc or fast agc mode to see which
one is going to work the best in light of the receivers agc working in its i.f.
that is being sampled. You can turn off the agc in the software and try that
but it greatly reduces the gain in the softwares output. Just install a switch
to your rig to turn off the agc. But do some test first before you go adding
the switch. A slow agc in the rig seems to be desirable in my thinking and so
if you have selectable agc attack settings, you can try them and see how they
work.
You will want to attenuate your rigs i.f. to the SDR hardware.
Above I said: "You can turn of the agc in the software and try that but it
greatly reduces the gain in the softwares output." In this case, if this works
better due to your rigs agc, you will not want to attenuate the i.f. input from
the crystal filter very much so that you have enough audio at the sound cards
output. Experiment and then decide what is the best thing working via
experimental test.
CIAO hardware is a HF receiver that tunes 0 to 30 MHz and so it will tap into
any HF i.f.
