I would have to agree on the Metcal MX500. I have several different temp controlled Wellers but after getting the Metcal I understand why they cost so much. I purchased mine: power source, base, and tip wand on Ebay for just over $100. They are available quite often. If you are looking for a Metcal sometimes it is cheaper to get the power source, base and tip wand seperately for best price. The power source has been updated several times by Metcal and the older units are much cheaper. I have the PS2E-1 which is 2nd generation with auto shut off. There are many tips to choose from and also available on Ebay for a deal. For de-soldering I also found a Metcal Talon station. This is a high end tweezer type with dual tips to heat both sides of the part. I got a good deal on the one I have but don't use it often. For me the worst part of soldering surface mount is seeing the work. I have used many microscopes and magnifier but never that happy. I ended up getting a Vision Engineering Compact Mantis Stereo Viewing system. This is top of the line system with excellent built in lighting. I use X4 and X6 objective lenses depending on the part sizes. They are hard to find for a deal so I ordered a new one and it is one of the best things I have ever done. 73, Mike Collins KF4BQ
