Did you try other versions in between 2008-03-04 and DFB-1.2.7 ?
Last time I tried DFB in 2008-09, and after fix it worked.
Location of directfbrc may have changed depending on your configure
options: from /etc/directfbrc to /usr/loca/etc/directfbrc
My directfb version from 2008-09-26 with changes, which have been
commited on 2008-10-14:

is still working with current kernel 2.6.25-gentoo-r7.
