"But people are just blind or what and keep pushing Maya probably mostly because that is what big studios are using or some similar logic :)"
Actually, I think it's a different problem. It's not use what the big studio use, it's more like very senior level people that extol the "there is only Maya" virtue and can't be bothered to learn. One of things that I try to advocate for in my studio is that people learn. Learning is more valuable that knowledge. If people just know Maya and can't be bothered to learn anything else than that really doesn't help me or my studio. At that point they are just Maya operators. That is exactly the talent I don't want. I want people who actually want to learn and try new things. If you just want to put on head phones and do Maya, I will outsource that work. Same goes for Softimage people too. I need people that can learn and when you have opinionated people that just spout off how software X is the best and not bother to learn well that just doesn't help much. You are just a Maya person and that's all. I had a talented Tech Artist here (came from a Maya background) and I pushed him into learning ICE and python in Softimage. He eventually moved to a different team...using Maya only as they root out any other tools...I was talking with him a while back and he mentioned a tool that he was working on. He said that he could have solved this problem with a simple ICE tree but since they only used Maya he was forced to code the crap out of the tool. At that moment, I think he finally understood why I push for people to learn as much as they can. He is still a Maya TD, but I think he finally got that having exposure\experience to more tools and process was a good thing. You just have to be open to it. And that's the problem, most Senior level people are not open to learning. They are comfortable where they are. My 2 cents...for what its worth. :) _______________________________________________________________________________ Marc Brinkley GO GO GO Microsoft Studios I got my Mojo working marc.brinkley [at] microsoft.com From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mirko Jankovic Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2012 1:30 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Softimage development Talking about adopting SI... I know couple different studios that would solve like a LOT of their production problems and speed up production and got higher quality with SI. What is happening is that they were small to mid studios that were struggling a lot with Maya without proper tech people to back it up, and SI as way better out of the box solution, in my opinion would get them covered in a lot of areas that I saw them struggling in. But people are just blind or what and keep pushing Maya probably mostly because that is what big studios are using or some similar logic :) This was probably a bit OT but still kinda shows major perspective of Softimage.. wrong and distorted but adopted as a fact.
