im doing my topo work in a couple of stages,

   1. get empty mesh
   2. assign planar uv map
   3. freeze
   4. First topo op builds a flat ribbon/ path /road,
   5. I then use ice to write directly to the uv samples (at this stage
   everything is good, i see the correct uvs)
   6. i then extrude the ribbon (all my uvs revert to 0,0)
