* Frame snapping:
In the Animation Editor, it's in Edit->Snap to Frame. Uncheck it to disable.

* Lattice:
Like others suggested, cage would work better for that situation. With
lattices you may adjust the Pre-Deformed Size XYZ proportions in its
settings. This lets you kinda scale it to the cube form you want, but not
properly pre-deform it.
