It was pointed out to me recently by a reliable source in Autodesk that Softimage in Japan accounts for more money than all the other M&E products in South East Asia (including Australia) put together.

I can't see them walking away from that in any hurry...

Good point. If that is true (I believe it is), it's the only good and valid reason for the Umbrella Corporation to continue with SI, since money seems to be all that counts. Anyway, every software has a lifespan, and eventually game's over (SI is still in it's "best" age...). When that time comes, let's get over it quickly and move on. There more creative and knowledgeable people out there than ever before, so the gap will be closed shortly.

It is obvious to me though that they really are trying to push everyone to Maya, the biggest problem I see it the track record they have. They have never actually created a successful M&E product from scratch under the Autodesk banner, Toxic was the only major product they released and we all know how that ended...

I will watch what AD is planning with Maya. It's still suffering from it's disgustingly technocratic approach. At the moment, I doubt it will ever can become a smooth app to work with, no matter how much manpower they throw at it. We'll see...

Interesting times, I bet Side FX are rubbing their hands together and they certainly seem to be discounting and promoting harder than they ever have before. Time will tell I guess, but I must admit to looking at companies like them and the Foundry as the true innovators at this time. I hope there is a grander scheme at play within Autodesk but pushing everyone down the Maya path is just not a good idea in my opinion, I know because I used it exclusively for almost 10 years.

Cheers, Nick
