And from that same commandline (what are you using?) you can start other programs like xterm or xeyes or whatever without a problem? If so, I have absolutely no clue what could be going on. If you get the same error something Xauthority related seems to be fxxxed (in that terminal at least) and I would recommend googling in that direction.
