Just to give you all the background here... Not long ago I had a BSOD in windows7 and my windows install somehow became corrupt. I was unable to recover, repair, or restore it.
As I knew I had other data on that disk in my users location etc. I booted into Linux from a USB stick and backed up everything I wanted to keep, then re-formatted the disk and re-installed windows7. A little while later I realised I'd forgotten a Softimage scene that I had stupidly saved somewhere slightly obscure in a moment of madness and that contained a considerable investment of time (I hadn't touched it in a while). In stepped PhotoRec (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec) Seriously, it's insanely capable. I created a custom signature for Softimage .scn files and it recovered over 10,000 files in around 4.5 hours from a 1TB drive. Finally, I moved all the recovered scene files into a database, split them into four sub-folders and set off four batch scripts to try and load and re-save each. I woke up in the morning to find around 600 valid scene files. As I knew that the particular scene in question was quite large, I just opened the biggest file there was and volia! back in business! So let it be known that I'm quite the happy chappy this morning!
