Mental ray has existed since the late 1980's and shipped as part of Softimage|3D since the mid 1990's.
However, 'Bunny' was rendered in Blue Sky's proprietary renderer. Blue Sky was given all this positive press about the project then announced at about the same time they were switching production to use Maya because they were tired of waiting for 'Sumatra' (XSI). The timing of it all left some bad tastes in people's mouths for a while making it look like Blue Sky used Softimage for the free press then slapping them in the face at the same time.
