I'm not sure if it is related, but Create symmetry template gets you an
error if your enveloped model weights aren't normalized and the sum of the
weights per point isn't 100.

It usually happens when you import FBX, the weights aren't normalized and
the weights sum about 99.9 or 100.001, but SI doesn't flag them.
You can normalize your weights by selecting your points, check normalize in
your weight editor and Add 0 weight to any deformer.
