It could also be that the scene file is invalid.

I wasn't able to repro that message by simply renaming the scn file outside
of Softimage, but I seem to remember that you can get problems doing stuff
like that.
Run Process Monitor when you try to open that scene. If Softimage is
looking for a .scn file with a different name, you'll see it. Then you can
copy your scene file, give it that other name, and try opening it. But I
think that is a long shot.
