If you want to begin doing tests on the fly, kinect and skanect are the best choices. I am currently using them for scanning sets for later reference on matchmoving and fx. For scanning people is not the best but gives good results for extras in crowds. A simple example i made for human figure: http://vimeo.com/79236919
