I am lucky, in that I work on much smaller projects, than the movie
studios, and I am
a freelancer that usually has a direct connection with the final deciding
voice.

I am get clients wanting me to give a fixed bid, and I do give them....with
these stipulations:
I only give a fixed bid based on a script, or treatment, that spells out
the effects, or animation shots.
I also will provide a rough story board based on the script, or treatment,
as I see fit, to
further lock in the work to be completed.

I also put a disclaimer, at the bottom of my estimates, that say that if
the content changes, then
any extra expenses to my client will be charged. I stipulate that I flag
when I see that content has changed
in the production process, and renegotiate the additional costs, to my
client, when that happens.

This covers me against a client decision that would change my bid, but it
is up to me to police it.

I can see where it can be much harder to follow this method in a large
studio production environment.

I have been willing to say "no" to changes that changes the cost to my
client and my client is not willing to pay.
That is the hardest part to be firm with. I am not afraid to lose a job, if
my payment is not there. If
I cave, then I will be on food stamps very quickly.
