Hi Jon

One of the silver linings from this whole mess is that there is greater
communication between the different Education places. In the last two weeks a
great deal has been learned about how other courses are run and their creative
and technical thinking.

For now our students that started the year on Softimage will continue with it.
( our main 3d animation course starts in February and runs until November). Our
games design students will however start their course in June on Maya. They
will use the LT version if its available from the ARC downloads section in time.

We have to see on how the pacing goes using Maya (LT) and adjust our course
accordingly. Use that experience to then adjust the course for the animation
students next year.

I am sure we will keep in touch.

Kind regards

Angus

Hi Maurice,
Thank you for your response, I am in touch with Steve now.

Angus, I agree its not an option to continue with EOL software. Trust me when I
say its very hard for me to say that, especially when the equivalent tools I
regularly use are not there or as robust etc in Maya. When new users need
tweaks to their characters including adding and editing shapes, GATOR helps me
fix students work almost daily! Weight painting tools and shape manager are
great too. Pass setup and then introducing node based comping in the FX tree....
Though useable with most 3d apps I have just set up a render farm with Soft and
produced student policies with video tutorials and documentation....All needs
re-doing

Our course has a big emphasis on the narrative and using Soft has allowed
students to achieve work fast, I honestly am not sure how next year will pan
out but I have little choice but to get on with it.
It has always been an absolute joy teaching Softimage and it has always been
well received.
I'm certainly not going to stop using it and my current second years will
likely use it next year for part of their productions.
I wish you best of luck with your transition and hope that we can share any
practices in the future and feel free to drop me a mail.

Kind regards,
Jon

Hi Jon, Angus
I am working with Steve Vasko from our Education group on a solution for
student licenses for students currently enrolled in programs and he will be
reaching out to those who have contacted me off-list.
The EDU suite is like the commercial Ultimate suite so it will include
Softimage 2015 for the next two years. He also has various options to help
educational institutions transition if they wish to. Anyone who needs mode
details, please feel free to contact me off list.
Thanks
maurice

Hi Maurice.
I mailed you directly with the same question a short while ago. Thank you for
your response (the same as you have just given)
Angus,
Pending Maurice s response, I have expressed my concerns that the education
community have not been given the same time scale as industry to migrate i.e.
one month
Retirement has effected everyone in different ways but one month is not
feasible.

I presume that our institutions ultimate entertainment suite will have the 2015
version of Soft?
If its the students that aren't eligible for their free downloadable version,
this also isnt a fair time scale.
I was going to contact my reseller but perhaps Maurice can answer.
We have the Entertainment suite that contains all 3 soft/max/maya
We have a games course that uses max and maya.
when we migrate are we only eligible for 2 of the 3?
We still need all 3 as we need to continue supporting students who are midway
through their studies using Soft.

Kind regards,

Jon

Subject: EDU Versions

Hi Maurice

Will the edu versions (ie the ones downloadable from the ARC website) be
available when the others are released next month ? That only gives us a month
and a bit before our course starts to change the course from Softimage to Maya.

Kind regards

Angus
