Thing is, even if they'd just add the tiniest stupid little things to each release, which would take close to zero effort, I'd still pay maintenance for it forever. I think most would be happy to pay just to make sure that Softimage doesn't break with future graphics drivers, OS versions etc. That's basically ALL I need. Everything else is ICEing on the cake.
