There is a command (as well as default
ctrl-alt-s hotkey ) to invoke a backup save (in the backup
folder).
I'm not a scripter, but I'm sure it would be not too complicated to setup a recycling timer that calls the save backup command ever X minutes, which could perhaps be paused by replacing the Q with a script that invokes the region tool, and resets or pauses the backup timer for say 15-20 min, or however much could be enough time for how long regions can take at most. ...
