watch out or the AARP 3-letter-word-Patrol will come and getcha.

Exclusive-OR gives you a tuning step each time any bit in the encoder
changes. So an encoder with two phases of 256 1's and 0's will give you
1024 tuning steps per revolution. I did that and it was a bit "too
much".

My Orion with 256 steps/rev is too slow and unnecessarily coarse. So I
chose "Baby Bear's porridge:"...er, encoder. I look for a change in just
one of the two phases: the other phase gives me the direction. This
gives 512 steps/revolution, which felt "just right".

In fact if you start with a high resolution encoder, you can change the
interpretation, then count if you want, and get any tuning rate you
like.
