Old? Did you hear someone say a (bad) 3-letter word, John? Bob, better watch out or the AARP 3-letter-word-Patrol will come and getcha.
Exclusive-OR gives you a tuning step each time any bit in the encoder changes. So an encoder with two phases of 256 1's and 0's will give you 1024 tuning steps per revolution. I did that and it was a bit "too much". My Orion with 256 steps/rev is too slow and unnecessarily coarse. So I chose "Baby Bear's porridge:"...er, encoder. I look for a change in just one of the two phases: the other phase gives me the direction. This gives 512 steps/revolution, which felt "just right". In fact if you start with a high resolution encoder, you can change the interpretation, then count if you want, and get any tuning rate you like. Bill
