I'm using the Creative SB Live 24 External (USB) w/ my laptop (Thinkpad T60p) and so sar I'm pretty pleased w/ it. I have 96KHz bandwidth, but in my case, I can't get 24bit throughput. I may look to firewire in the future, but this works fine for now, is a decent step up from the built-in soundcard, and is satisfactory for portable ops. Brian AC7NA

Most lap tops have mic. in and speaker out only You have no right and left channel in or out. That is necessary to receive and transmit with softrock.
