It is necessary to avoid ground loops. Just possibly you may get away with 
it but I recommend you work out a way to isolate the BNC socket from the 
box.
Also use an insulated audio jack.
Ground loops can really degrade the performance of these units with spurious 
signals all over the place. just one ground connection to the computer. Use 
an isolated PSU.
