The latter option sounds better. IIUC both method can be used where in the end, gerrit replication only need a way to authenticate to an external git+ssh endpoint. We could also register MX records and make the internal smtp server listen on the public address so that the user's mail could be admin@fqdn. Thank you Fabien for that summary. -Tristan
