Wayne, You definitely have my sympathies. I have been out of work since 4/25...the company I worked for, Siemens VDO Automotive (yes, that VDO) had been in Winchester Va since 1976...they didn't give us any proposals, they just closed the place and sent everything to Mexico (NAFTA). (Actually, they also closed a plant in Conn, as well as the plant in Indiana). Our production workers made about $10/hr ($400 week). On one of my trips to one of our Mexican plants (before the announcement) I found the Mexican workers made about $40 week, and were envied by other people in the area to have such a well paying job. We did have about 1 1/2 year notice and I was lucky enough to stay until just about the end, so my severance was ok, BUT I would rather be working. Ironically, the management that mismanaged the Winchester plant into the position of closing virtually all hooked up in Siemens jobs in Detroit or Mexico, so in a few years their management skills should do for Mexico what the! y did for us. About 10 years ago I was involved with a previous employer and was responsible for "NAFTA Content Reporting" so I saw very early on what was coming. Ross Perot was correct, he just got the timing wrong...it took a bit longer. Also interesting, to me anyway, is that there was a meeting in the Mexican plant (Juarez) where the plant manager was giving the employees a pep talk and warning that they had to do a better job otherwise they would be losing their jobs to the Chinese. And all the Chinese Government has to do to screw with the world is to say "today we won't be shipping anything anywhere" and see what happens...let alone if they do it for a week. But they'd never do that, would they? Good luck, Herb [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: As of yesterday it is official.................... Add me to the list of soon to be unemployed due to foreign competition. The company that I have worked for 15 years now as a patternmaker is going to buy all of thier products from China. THANK YOU NAFTA/GATT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They first came to the union and said that they were losing 4.2 million dollars a year and that if we could come up with a cost savings of this amount plus a little for profit that they would keep the company open. We (the United Steelworkers Union) came up with 4.8 million in cost savings including wage cuts. Upon recieving this proposal the companies corporate attorneys told the Union that we must come up with 7 million dolllars in order to cover the projected profits that they were expecting to see from their overseas purchases. All of the members of the Union got together, met with all of the tax departments including the city of Salem, Ohio, the utility companies, PUCO, etc. and put together a proposal including wage AND benifits cuts to be presented to the corporate attorneys in the amount of 9 million dollars. THE COMPANY REJECTED THE PROPOSAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE boycott all Eljer Plumbingware, Zurn Industries, Household International, US Industries and Jacuzzi Brands products as they will all be coming from China now. We , the United Steelworkers of America would appreciate it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you need any sandblasting , metal polishing or painting done.....feel free to contact me personally !!!!!!!
