Um, did anyone consider the fact that the mechanical
voltage regulator is pretty esy to work on and
servicable for a looong time? Take off the side cover.
Unplug the three wires that go to the regulator,
(white, green and black *mark 'em if your sticker fell
off*). Remove the (2) 10mm bolts that hold the
regulator. Take out the (2) phillips head screws that
hold the cover on the regulator, taking it easy on the
rubber o-ring inside (it's 20 years old and
5-will-get-you-10 it's never been opened). Clean the
contacts on the top and bottom with a points file (or
a an emery board) and check the gaps, bottom one
first. (0.024-0.040 inches) Adjust the gap by
loosening the screw on the side of the bottom arm. Top
one next (0.012-0.16) Adjust with the screw on the top
arm. Put a THIN coat of petroleum jelly on the gasket
put it back together and on the bike. Drive.
