'81 Yamaha XS400 Special. I'd actually passed on the '76 CB750 I now own (see very old and abandoned "Upgrades Update" threads in the archive). I got it for $125 after a UC Berkeley coed backed over it in her VW Cabrio. Almost killed myself trying to ride it to the dealer (mostly because I hadn't learned how to ride yet--Ah, to be young and retarded). Replaced handlebars, shift and brake pedals, and taught myself to ride it on the long, straight, ex-warehouse streets of the Berkeley flats. A fun bike, when it felt like starting (very finicky starter motor brushes, and no kickstart)--the six gears made it VERY snappy to ride. Sold it after four months for $250, which allowed me to buy the CB750 once I felt confident riding. The guy who bought it never registered it, indeed, never even unlocked it from the signpost, and I got calls for the next five years from a guy who wanted to buy it, because it was still in my name at the DMV!
Cheers, Carlos
