I have to agree that this is the best thing to do to diagnose the problem. It certainly sounds like it is running rich. I have had this happen to me a few times, once it was due to an obstruction of part of the air filter, the other (and more serious) time was a sticking choke. The choke was fairly easy to diagnose, when the problem occured, it could be cleared up by pumping the choke lever until it got better. This was a strong indicator of where the problem was...
