FHS is respected in the linux and bsd communities but there are many exceptions that prevent it from reaching the ideal goal universal acceptance and universal portability of applications that use it. in an ideal world it would be the filesystem template for all unix-based operating systems, including the solaris OE.
instead of a universally accepted standard you might get what you want by noting the BCP (best current / common practice). you can set a defacto standard in your organization modelled on BCP and the FHS. that might just be enough to make life better for endusers and system admins. so what is BCP for solaris filesystems? maybe that can be discussed on this list, continuing with the the url posted by daniel bird in a previous message: http://www.sun.com/blueprints/browsesubject.html http://www.sun.com/blueprints/browsesubject.html#operatenv so much for the issue of where files should be located in a filesystem tree. the other issue is what size to make the slices or partitions. i think that might invovle volume management and soft partitions. maybe someone could explain vol mgt and refer us to webpages. i've been looking at EVMS and LVMS for linux. is there anything like it for solaris? any open-source dynamic / logical volume management software for solaris? -- TT -------- Original Message -------- Subject: RE: [Solaris-Users] Published Standards From: "Grindell, Joan M." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Fri, August 27, 2004 7:20 am To: "'Solaris-Users mailing list'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Yes i am looking for Solaris inparticularly. Yes i am also interested in how to best partition the HD. I looked at the website, it is impressive. How is the FHS group view in the community? may thanks Joan -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, August 27, 2004 12:14 AM To: Solaris-Users mailing list Subject: RE: [Solaris-Users] Published Standards joan, this is not a direct answer to your question, but it request for clarification: are you trying to find a standard for solaris that serves a function similar to the "Filesystem Hierarchy Standard" in linux? see this url for details: http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html is that what you're looking for in solaris? are you also interested in how best to partition the HD? -- TT > -------- Original Message -------- > Subject: [Solaris-Users] Published Standards > From: "Grindell, Joan M." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Date: Thu, August 26, 2004 1:09 pm > To: "'Solaris-Users mailing list'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "'The > SunHELP List'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> _______________________________________________ Solaris-Users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.filibeto.org/mailman/listinfo/solaris-users
