maybe late, but try GNU tar (from sunfreeware). Solaris tar has given me
some checksum errors for GNU tar'ed files.

I just wonder why I always encounter a directory checksum error when I tried
to untar the same file which I downloaded. I have downloaded a tetex3.0
package. Ive actually use this once, then my workstation crash so I have
reinstalled the solaris 10 again. I use the same package to install tetex
but it I always encountered directory checksum error I always encounter this
and it it my 4th to download that file but still unsuccessful.
