I wouldn't. When you patch, the patch information is updated under
there. And when you delete it, then the next set of patch sets won't
install properly. I learned that the hard way. 
If you are using solstice, I would recommend just adding some space to
/var if you have any to add. Otherwise, do a du -ks /var/* and sort it
by size and see if you can find any excessively large logs that aren't
rotating. Getting users to clean up mail, if you have a lot, might also
help.
