Agreed. You cannot boot off the disk. That does not mean you lost your data.
At the ok prompt run. sifting ide or sifting show . There is a command that shows up for probing ide. Most likely your system is seeing the disk but unable to read boot info. if you are lucky just the boot is corrupt and data intact. If it is visible there at the obp then your system will be able to see it after you boot up from cdrom. You should be able to mount the slices that you need your data from.
