Agreed. You cannot boot off the disk. That does not mean you lost your data. 

 At the ok prompt run. sifting ide or sifting show . There is a command that 
shows up for probing ide. Most likely your system is seeing the disk but unable 
to read boot info. 

if you are lucky just the boot is corrupt and data intact.

If it is visible there at the obp then your system will be able to see it after 
you boot up from cdrom.

You should be able to mount the  slices that you need your data from.

Again this will work only if your boot info  is corrupt

So, IMHO the disk is detected as disk, but there is problem read from it
And BTW the disk is IDE, not SCSI

recognized, so what do you talk about fsck

My guess is she ment boot from the cdrom. Once you have the console fsck
your bad drive
And mount it under /a. If the file system is still intact you should be
able to see data under /a
