Thanks for the quick responses. Gonna try to go with a flash archive right 
first, see how that works. I already have an admin webserver for just such an 
occasion, and I remember seeing the installation asking about installing from 
flash archive.

The other option was using zfs snapshots, which I'm not sure about how I'd get 
that on an empty system, so I'll hold that as a backup plan.
