We're also not using solr in production yet, so switching is easy. Highlighting, I think, should remain an experimental feature subject to modification until at least the lucene highlighting approach has stabilized.
I was going to try and rewrite my highlighting patch to use the new facilities. I can also try and update SolrPluginUtils at the same time, as I'll need to make changes to that as well.
I had started modifying the patch accordingly but hadn't got past the point of making superficial changes, so I'd be happy to review yours. -Mike
