I don't think we need to worry about returning an array of all shards... they
are supposed to be disjoint, but we handle gracefully if an id is repeated
(instead of blowing up).
Instead of "shard", maybe we want to pick something that won't clash with a
real field name quite so easily?
_shard? (yes it's uglier).
