David Smiley commented on SOLR-236:
-----------------------------------

I've been watching this thread forever without saying anything but want to
offer my two cents and I'll but out.

I very much disagree with a policy blocking non-production-ready code from
being in source control. All code starts off this way and it would be quite a
shame not to leverage the advantages of source control simply because it isn't
ready yet. If people are uncomfortable with it being in trunk then _simply_
use a branch. Of course, how simple "simple" is depends on one's comfort with
source control and the particular source control technology used and tools to
help you (e.g. IDEs). By the way, git makes "feature branches" (which is what
this would be) easy to manage and integrates bidirectionally with subversion.
If you're not comfortable with branching because you're not familiar with it
then you need to learn. By "you" I don't mean anyone in particular, I mean all
professional software developers. Source control and branching are tools of
our trade.

> This patch include a new feature called "Field collapsing".
> "Used in order to collapse a group of results with similar value for a given
> field to a single entry in the result set. Site collapsing is a special case
> of this, where all results for a given web site is collapsed into one or two
> entries in the result set, typically with an associated "more documents from
> this site" link. See also Duplicate detection."
> The implementation add 3 new query parameters (SolrParams):
> "collapse.field" to choose the field used to group results
> "collapse.type" normal (default value) or adjacent
> "collapse.max" to select how many continuous results are allowed before
> collapsing
> TODO (in progress):
> - More documentation (on source code)
> - Test cases
> Two patches:
> - "field_collapsing.patch" for current development version
> - "field_collapsing_1.1.0.patch" for Solr-1.1.0
> P.S.: Feedback and misspelling correction are welcome ;-)
