I believe the field-collapse-5.patch should work for 1.4. Some bugs were fixed
in later patches so I recommend using the latest patch on the latest successful
nightly build if that is an option for you.
Applying the latest patch on the 1.4 sources will properly result in some minor
merge errors, but I think these should be easy the fix.
