denormalizing data is a very common practice in Solr,
don't be afraid to try it if it makes your problem easier.

Also, take a look at the distributed analytics plugin, it allows
you to fairly painlessly add custom code to do whatever
you want, see: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-6150
