260K documents isn't even close to straining Solr, so it must be something else...
What version of Solr are you using? Can we see your solrconfig.xml and schema.xml? What exactly is the command you issue when you get this error? Have you looked at the admin page in Solr (localhost:8983/solr/admin), and tried some searches there?
