VuFind (http://vufind.org) uses Solr for library catalog (or similar) applications and features a MySQL database which it uses for storing user tags and comments outside of Solr itself. If there were a mechanism more closely tied to Solr for achieving this sort of effect, that would allow VuFind to do things with considerably more elegance!
