If you are in multicore mode, you can stop a core, move the backed up files into place, and restart/recreate the core. That would have the effect you desire.
You may well be able to get away with swapping out the files and reloading the core, but the above would be safer. Best make sure you're not indexing or committing to the core at the time you do this.
