You can also do all this via HTTP commands, see:
http://wiki.apache.org/solr/SolrReplication#HTTP_API

that allows you to control _all_ replication from the master (i.e. tell the
master "don't to any replication") or just tell a slave "don't replicate
any more" as well as a lot of other stuff.
