Many naming choices in Solr could use an overhaul. As you've pointed out, some names work well for single shard per machine setups. Others work well for cloud but not so well for non cloud. I think that things are headed towards always using zookeeper, and possibly towards always being cloud, even for nonredundant and nonsharded single index deployments.
