Richard -- I'd suggest you trying setting it up without the SMC box first. I have set this exact configuration up (last year at some point) and there were issues with NAT up front but I *did* get it working. Once you've established you can run without the SMC box, you can add it back into the mix again... (so the answer is "no" you don't really need a real IP address on the client side.. )
