XP does things a little different on log-on. For example, if you make a group policy computer change, it could take up to 3 restarts to fully implement that policy change. This is because XP is set to check policies symmetrically. The computer first checks the policy. Then it marks that a change has been made. Then it downloads the change. Then it applies. When done Symmetrically, XP loads faster but it can take 3 restarts for it to finally take affect.

However, you can dictate that the policy is applied asymmetrically. This will cause the log on to not complete until the process has been finished.

Check to see if the policy is set to default or being applied asymmetrically.

Subject: [SonicWALL]- Sonicwall VPN Client v.8 made my XP slow

Installed the VPN client on my first XP PC.

Before installation (totally blank XP installation), logon time (not PC startup time) was 10 seconds, now almost 5 minutes. Why ?

Is the XP doing some domain stuff or is the VPN client doing it's dirty work ?

On my W2K IBM Thinkpad there's virtually no difference in the logon time with/without the VPN client.
