Albanian foreign minister upbeat on Kosovo becoming independent by year end Released : Mar 29, 2006 10:22 AM TALLINN, Estonia-Albania's foreign minister said Wednesday he was confident Kosovo would become independent by the end of 2006, and pledged his government's support during talks over the disputed province's future. "We are a country very much interested in the stability of our Balkan neighbors," Foreign Minister Besnik Mustafaj told reporters in the Estonian capital, Tallinn. "This is particularly the case this year, when there will be a change of the map because Kosovo will become independent." Mustafaj told reporters that Albania "vigorously supports" the work of Martti Ahtisaari, the former Finnish president who is leading the Kosovo talks as a U.N. envoy. Ethnic Albanians, who comprise about 90 percent of Kosovo's population of 2 million, want independence for the province. Serbia insists, however, on retaining some control over Kosovo, which it considers an integral part of the country and the birthplace of its national identity centuries ago. Mustafaj is the first Albanian government official to pay an official visit to Estonia, a Baltic EU member country that has seen rapid economic growth since breaking free from Soviet occupation in 1991. Mustafaj met President Arnold Ruutel and Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, and was also scheduled to hold talks with Estonia's Prime Minister Andrus Ansip. =============== Group Moderator: [EMAIL PROTECTED] page at http://magazine.sorabia.net for more informations about current situation in Serbia http://www.sorabia.net Slusajte GLAS SORABIJE nas talk internet-radio (Serbian Only) http://radio.sorabia.net Yahoo!
