Israeli forces kill four Palestinians

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has condemned an Israeli military
raid into the West Bank city of Ramallah that killed at least four
Palestinians and wounded 20 others. Egypt's state news agency quoted
Mubarak as saying that Israel could not achieve security through
military force. Mubarak's comments came as he began talks with
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in the Red Sea resort of Sharm
el-Sheikh aimed at reviving the stalled Middle East peace process.
The Israeli military has said that it moved into Ramallah in what
was meant to be a routine operation to arrest four Palestinian
militants.

Democrats take control of US Congress

The Democratic Party has taken control of the US Congress for the
first time in 12 years. California representative Nancy Pelosi, the
first woman to ever hold the powerful position of Speaker of the
House, said it was an historic day for the Democrats. She announced
the introduction of a raft of economic and social policy measures
for the Democrats' first 100 hours in office. US President George W.
Bush had earlier appealed for congressional unity and called on the
Democrats to work together with his Republican party. The Democrats
swept to victory in November's congressional polls taking advantage
of widespread public frustration over the Bush administration's
handling of the Iraq war.

Saddam aides execution is postponed

Iraqi officials have postponed the execution of two former aides of
ousted Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein until at least Sunday. Saddam's
half-brother and a chief judge of the revolutionary court were
scheduled to be hanged this Thursday. Both the new UN
Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and the body's High Commissioner for
Human Rights Louise Arbour appealed directly to Iraqi President
Jalal Talabani not to carry out the executions. Meanwhile two guards
have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the secret
filming of Saddam's hanging. The graphic footage, recorded on a
mobile telephone, was then published on the Internet.

Two bombs explode in Baghdad

Two bombs have exploded near a petrol station in Baghdad killing at
least 13 people and wounding 25 others. Local officials say the
first bomb targeted people buying fuel, the second went off when
police arrived at the scene. The attack comes a day after the end of
the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday.

Merkel to hold talks with Bush in Washington

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to hold talks with US
President George W. Bush in Washington later on Thursday. Merkel is
pushing for closer economic co-operation between the European Union
and the United States. She will also outline plans to revive the
work of the Middle East peace quartet, made up of the EU, Russia the
UN and the US. Germany currently holds both the G8 and EU
presidencies.

German MP charged in VW scandal

A member of the German parliament is facing charges in connection
with a corruption scandal at Europe's biggest carmaker, Volkswagen.
A statement released by the prosecutors office in Braunschweig said
Hans-Jürgen Uhl had been indicted on two counts of being an
accessory to fraud and five counts of perjury. At the time of the
alleged crimes, the Social Democrat politician was a senior member
of VW's works council. The scandal centres on allegations that
labour representatives and works council members received bonuses
and illegal perks in return for approving company restructuring
measures. Uhl is the second person to be charged. Former VW
personnel director Peter Hartz is to go on trial later this month.

Somali troops step up search for Islamists

Somali troops backed by Ethiopian forces have stepped up their
search for Islamist leaders who have been driven out of their
strongholds. US naval forces patrolling off the Horn of Africa are
helping in the search for suspected al-Qaeda terrorists linked to
the Islamic Courts militants. Somalia's deputy prime minister has
said that up to 3,500 Islamist fighters are still hiding in and
around the capital Mogadishu. On Wednesday, the EU called on
Somalia's transitional government and Islamist fighters to negotiate
a lasting peace plan.

Singapore helps Indonesia plane search

The government of Singapore has sent aircraft to Indonesia to help
search for the wreckage of the plane that disappeared near the
island of Sulawesi in bad weather with 102 people aboard on Monday.
There have been conflicting reports about what happened just before
the plane went down and whether it had sent distress signals before
disappearing off the radar screen. Indonesian officials say they
lack the tools to receive signals from flights covering its vast
territory. The country is an archipelago of over 17,000 islands.

Java ferry captain found alive

Indonesian rescue officials say that the captain of the ferry which
sank in the Java Sea last week has been found alive. He was one of
around a dozen people discovered on Wednesday clinging to an oil
rig. So far some 220 survivors have been picked up, however 400
others are still missing and hopes of finding them alive are fading.
A leading investigator has said that high waves crashing into the
car deck of the ferry very likely caused it to capsize.

2007 predicted to be warmest year on record

British scientists and meteorologists say that 2007 could be the
warmest year on record. They say that the El Nino weather effect in
the Pacific would lead to an extended warming period pushing up
global temperatures. Scientists said there was a 60 percent chance
that the current record in the average surface temperature set in
1998 would be exceeded. It's believed that a combination of
greenhouse gas emissions and the El Nino effect, which occurs in
cycles, could lead to the rise in temperature.

New head of WHO starts job

The new director general of the World Health Organisation Margaret
Chan has officially taken up her position. Chan is the first Chinese
to head a United Nations body. The 59-year old bird flu expert and
former Hong Kong health chief was appointed to the post two months
ago following the unexpected death of her South Korean predecessor,
Lee Jong-Wook. Chan said she will outline her vision for the WHO at
the World Health Assembly in May but said no major restructuring is
in store.
