Somali troops deploy to prevent unrest

Hundreds of Somali government soldiers have deployed in the capital
Mogadishu to prevent further unrest after Saturday's violent
protests against the presence of Ethiopian troops. Witnesses said
three people, including a young boy were killed when protesters and
Ethiopian troops, backing the interim government, exchanged fire. A
government source said only one person was killed. Meanwhile in the
central town of Baladwayne, hundreds of people took to the streets
demanding that Ethiopian troops free a military commander detained
for refusing to hand over an ousted Islamist.

Dozens injured in Bangladesh protests

Dozens of people have been injured in clashes between protesters and
police in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka. Police used teargas and
rubber bullets against stone-throwing activists taking part in a
nationwide blockade to force electoral reform. The three-day
transport blockade is being organised by an alliance of political
parties who want elections set for this month postponed. The
alliance led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, head of
the Awami League, says it will boycott the January 22 vote,
alleging it will be fraudulent. But interim Bangladeshi President
Iajuddin Ahmed says the elections will go ahead as planned.

20 die in El Salvador prison riot

A riot involving hundreds of inmates at a high security prison in El
Salvador has resulted in at least 20 deaths. The deaths occurred
when violence broke out between two rival gangs at the prison in
Apanteos, 70 kilometres west of San Salvador. Police said the
situation is now under control after prison guards had to summon
help from the military. Salvadoran prisons are badly overcrowded,
with more than 13,000 inmates in a system built to hold fewer than
6,000.

At least 12 killed in Iraq attacks

At least 12 people have been killed in insurgent attacks in Iraq,
just a day after Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki announced a new plan
for curbing violence in Baghdad. Earlier Iraq's army said it killed
30 militants in a Baghdad clash thought to mark the start of the new
drive. The US army, meanwhile, says two US soldiers were killed in
separate attacks in Iraq. This comes just days before US President
George W. Bush is due to announce his new strategy for Iraq. Bush
has said he is in favour of boosting US troop numbers in Iraq,
despite opposition in the new Democrat-controlled Congress.

UN chief Ban urges stay on executions

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has 'strongly urged'
the Iraqi government to halt upcoming executions, after the hanging
of dictator Saddam Hussein. According to the UN headquarters in New
York, Mr. Ban sent a letter to Iraq's permanent representative
calling for 'restraint by the government of Iraq in the execution of
death sentences imposed by the Iraqi High Tribunal.' No date has
been set for the executions of Saddam's half-brother and former
chief judge, who were also accused of genocide.

Mass Fatah rally amid Hamas tensions

Tens of thousands of supporters of Palestinian President Mahmoud
Abbas's Fatah faction have rallied in Gaza in a show of force to the
governing Islamist Hamas movement. The rally was called to mark the
42nd anniversary of the once dominant Fatah, which suffered a
surprise loss to Hamas in parliamentary elections last year. The
demonstration came as masked Fatah gunmen released a video of a
kidnapped Hamas official, threatening to expand attacks against
Hamas if it rejects calls to disband its militia in the Gaza Strip.
On Saturday, Abbas declared the Hamas security force in Gaza
illegal. That drew a sharp response from the Islamists and a vow to
double its security force in Gaza to 12,000 personnel.

Israel denies plans to attack Iran

Israel is denying a report by a British newspaper which claimed that
the Jewish state plans to attack Iran's uranium enrichment
facilities using nuclear weapons. The weekly newspaper, The Sunday
Times, quoted Israeli military sources as saying that two Israel Air
Force squadrons are training to blow up an enrichment plant at
Natanz, south-east of Tehran, using nuclear bombs. But Israeli
Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev dismissed the report as
"incorrect". Regev told reporters that Israel fully supports
international efforts to stop Iran's nuclear programme through
diplomatic means. Meanwhile in Tehran, Iran once again vowed harsh
retaliation against any attack on its nuclear sites.

Polish archbishop resigns in spying row

The newly-appointed archbishop of Warsaw has resigned after
admitting he spied for Poland's former communist regime. Archbishop
Stanislaw Wielgus read out his resignation at a special mass in
Warsaw Cathedral replacing a formal ceremony that was to have sworn
him in. His resignation came at the request of Pope Benedict who
appointed him just a month ago. Last week a special Polish Church
commission found that Wielgus had collaborated with communist-era
secret police.

Germany's SPD continues talk on future

The leadership of Germany's Social Democrats is meeting in Bremen
for a second day to discuss the direction of future policy. Talks
about foreign and family policies are on the agenda. On Saturday,
the SPD leadership agreed on new initiatives to help the long-term
unemployed find jobs. The party, which is currently part of a Grand
Coalition with the conservatives led by Chancellor Angela Merkel,
has been under increasing pressure from those who say it's losing
its political profile.

German healthcare reform back on track

A much-criticised reform of the German healthcare system appears
likely to come into force after Bavarian conservatives signalled at
the weekend they were ready to drop their opposition to the measure.
In a Sunday newspaper interview, Bavarian premier and conservative
Christian Social Union leader Edmund Stoiber expressed confidence
the draft law would win parliamentary approval and take effect as
planned on April 1. The planned overhaul aims to trim fat from the
costly 140 billion euro healthcare system and make it transparent for
workers who fund it through mandatory contributions.
