Merkel: Conditional independence "will not be less than independence"
All the media quote German Chancellor Angela Merkel's interview with German TV ZDF, where she said the Balkans will be a priority for the German EU presidency. Speaking about Kosovo, she said, "We do not want to interfere with Mr. Ahtisaari, who is responsible for the Kosovo issue." Asked if the situation in Kosovo will deteriorate once it gets its "conditional independence", Merkel replied, "It would not be fair for me to intervene here and say what I think, but it will certainly be no less than independence." "The most important thing is that, on one hand, the wish of Kosovars for more independence is met, but not at the price of it bringing deteriorated situations in Serbia which would weaken democracy there," Merkel said. She also said it is important that democratic forces win in Serbia's elections. According to Merkel, these two goals can be reached after the elections in Serbia and after Ahtisaari submits his proposal. Zëri notes that Merkel, whose country chairs the European Union for the first half of 2006, refused to say what will be the future of Kosovo, recalling that the UN Status Envoy Ahtisaari will present his proposal on the status of Kosovo.
